I know I have enough books, but I honestly haven’t read a book on simple living that I enjoyed. So, please consider this my official entry!

Which ones have you read? I really like “Simplicity Lessons”–it talks a lot about community and the role of simplicity in a healthy society.

I read the classic “The Circle of Simplicity” by Cecile Andrews and absolutely hated it. I thought she was ridiculously patronizing of low-income black communities (why oh why oh why do wealthy white women always romanticize poor communities of color?). It was poorly researched, flakey…ug. Just awful. Yet, it is beloved. Which I suppose just makes me an asshole.
I tried reading another–can’t even remember the title–about living simply but fully. I had to put it down out of sheer annoyance (this asshole theory I have might be gaining steam). I really love a lot of the local food movement books I’ve read–they’re well researched, lots of critical thought demonstrated, etc. But the simplicity movement stuff I’ve read has a lot of antecdotal “evidence” as larger fact, is patronizing of the poor, etc. It’s odd, because most folks I know in the simple living movement are uber smart and compassionate. Obviously, I’m not reading the right books! (But “Your Money or Your Life” is a stand out among the crowd!)
Thus ends this bitch session. I hope it doesn’t disqualify me from the contest.

I haven’t read “The Cirlce of Simplicity,” so I can’t comment on that. But I would try Linda Breen Pierce–I have not found her to be at all patronizing. She values all walks of life and presents many sensible solutions and thoughts for both personal and community dilemmas. And since you mentioned the local food movement, “Animal Vegetable Miracle” made a huge impression on me.

I’m always game for new books, especially ones about simple living. I don’t get enough access to such books, alas.
And I’m also always game for hot drinks! Tea’s good even in the summer, so far as I’m concerned!

There’s nothing like respite from cold or rainy weather by curling up inside with a warm drink and a book. I love the picture you’ve included, pictures of books alone inspire me!

With two busy and active little girls I have little time to read…but this little twosome might just force me to carve out a little time for myself!

Just started Less is More by Cecile Andrews and Wanda Urbanska (which I think will be good) but a few I can really recommend as books that make you take a second look at your choices are: Not Buying It by Judith Levine, and the Geography of Bliss by Eric Weiner. I’d love to win!
